A European treatment protocol for bone sarcoma in patients older than 40 years

Non-randomized phase II multicenter study

• Age: 41–65 years
• Histologically verified high-grade sarcoma of bone of any site and stage
• Any of the following histological types: osteosarcoma (high-grade surface, central primary and secondary), fibrosarcoma, malignant fibrous histiocytoma, leiomyosarcoma, dedifferentiated chondrosarcoma, angiosarcoma
• Normal bone marrow, hepatic, cardiac and renal function
• Absence of contraindications to the use of cisplatin, doxorubicin and ifosfamide.

Treatment strategy

• Wide surgical removal of the tumor
• Systemic treatment with drugs active against osteosarcoma (DOX, CDP, IFO, MTX).
• Radiotherapy for patients with unresectable tumors.
• Radiotherapy is recommended for patients who underwent inadequate surgical removal of the tumor, but the addition of radiotherapy cannot compensate for an inadequate surgical treatment.
